DÈJÁ VIEW 50 (Sleeps 4 - 6)
It’s a pretty name. Roughly translated, it means `A view
already’, which was true of the charming enclave in which
it was built in the ‘70s – situated on the lower slopes
of the mountain, all 20 of the white-walled houses, with their green
woodwork and grey-tiled roofs, have a view of the yacht and naval
harbour. Situated in a cobbled enclave just 30 steps from the shops
and eating places that line the main road in the historic naval
centre of Simon’s Town.

It’s close to the main road, 39 steps up in fact. So leave
your car in the lock-up garage attached to the house and walk down
to the pub and pizza place, restaurants – sushi, fish, fine
and fashionable – and shops. Turn right on the main road and
in 10 minutes you’re at Boulders, home of the African Penguin
colony. Turn left and 10 minutes off is Long Beach (long, but never
crowded), next to Simon’s Town station. Hop aboard a train
and take a 10-minute trip to Kalk Bay, a fishing harbour village
with a string of shops on its main road.
It’s on a cul-de-sac, so it’s quiet. In whale season
(July to October), you’ll hear the giants breathing in the
bay at night; all year round, you’ll turn over and go back
to sleep as midshipmen whistle the various watches and duties of
the early morning. Later, ships’ hooters announce the comings
and goings of the frigates, tugs and subs you can see from your
bedroom windows and deck, whilst gulls wheel and cry in the yacht
basin just below you
There’s space for six in three rooms: a main bedroom with
king-size bed, a second bedroom with two close-as-a-kiss single
beds, and a lounge off the deck (with bar fridge for your pre-barbecue
evening drinks) which has a double sleeper couch.
As important, there are two bathrooms, one en suite with a bath
and toilet, one with bath, shower and toilet, and a downstairs cloakroom
with basin and toilet. So no need for queues in the morning!
When you’re relaxing after a day out, there’s lots
to relax with: games for the children, a TV with cable (DStv), a
shaded courtyard off the kitchen and dining room for when the local
south-easter gets up speed, a braai (barbecue) for that special
South African custom (don’t forget to cook a nice fresh Cape
fish, obtainable from the nearby fishing village of Kalk Bay), a
hammock for siestas….
You’ll find Dèjá View well-equipped, with washing
machine, tumble drier, dish washer and microwave as well as the
obligatory fridge (large enough for a family of 6 with deep freeze
space to match) and stove. And a fireplace for when the winter cold
bites, with heaters in the bedrooms.
