Gordons Bay

Tucked in the shadow of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, this sunny holiday village has a small harbour and is a popular angling and boating resort. The Gordons Bay beach is protected from the wind and is safe for swimming. The beachfront promenade is packed with sea food restaurants, pubs and coffee shops.

The town is named after Colonel Gordon, commander of the Cape garrison in the late 18th century. The twisting coastal road between Gordon’s Bay and Cape Hangklip is one of the most spectacular anywhere, it has recently been rebuilt, making for a pleasant and safe journey. The route offers magnificent views over False Bay to Simonstown, over 40km distant.

In the old harbour one can board a charter boat to explore False Bay or to go deep sea fishing.

Take the Beach Road past the harbour and join the R44 to Kleinmond and Hermanus. This is an exciting drive along a wild and rocky coast interspersed with sandy beaches.

Golfers are spoilt for choice with several courses in easy driving distance - Erinvale, Spier and Boshenmeer.

When the weather doesn't suit beach activities, try the winelands of the Western Cape. Travel inland to Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl and you will be in the heart of the wine growing area.

Don't forget the whales - Southern Right whales come to calve in Gordons Bay between June and November - they come really close in to the shore.
