It’s a well-known fact that Cape Town self-catering accommodation puts you at the heart of South Africa’s most scenic attractions, but it gets even better in the springtime.

Thanks to good winter rains, the Cape flower season looks like it’s going to yield a bumper crop of blooms this year. Here’s how to make the most of the Namaqualand flowers on your trip to the Mother City.

1. Timing is Everything

Nature being what it is, it’s impossible to predict when the flowers will start to raise their heads. It’s important to note that these are most prolific in warmer areas where spring arrives a little earlier, so you can expect the floral fiesta to start up anytime from mid-August.

Here’s when to expect the action to start in the Cape’s best-known floral regions:

  • Blaauwberg –August and September
  • Darling – July to October
  • Cape West Coast – August and September
  • Cederberg –  Early September
  • Paternoster– August to October
  • Cape Columbine – August to October
  • Hopefield – September

The Darling Wildflower Show from 22 to 29 September 2019, and the Hopefield Fynbos Show from 29 August to 1 September, deserve a place in your diary too.

2. Make the Most of the Experience

The flowers show their faces during the warmest hours of the day from 11am to 3pm and are at their best when the temperature is at least 18 degrees Celsius. For the ultimate experience, choose a sunny day – the flowers are reluctant to show off under cloud cover.

These sun-loving blooms are always turned towards the sun, following its trajectory through the sky, so if you keep the sun behind you, you’ll get the best view.

Get out of your car and walk around, taking care not to trample any vegetation as you go, you won’t get the same effect from your car.  Never pick the flowers.

In between your forays into the fields, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy in the area, take some time to enjoy this beautiful part of the world.

3. Book Now

The most important part of planning your trip to see the Namaqualand flowers is booking early. These delicate specimens really draw the crowds and you might not find accommodation if you don’t act fast. Get in touch today and book your Cape Town self-catering accommodation before it’s too late!
