The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival is just what the doctor ordered to put the winter blues on the back burner. This annual feast of fun is not to be missed during your stay in Cape Town city accommodation, and here’s why.
Every year, the Cape Town Funny festival brings an abundance of good vibes and great entertainment to town when top local and international comedic acts take to the stage at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch. This year the action is on from 1 to 28 July, but bookings are already open. You want front row seats for this one – so get busy.
Who’s on Stage?
Many of South Africa’s top comedians cut their teeth in this environment. Think Jimmy Carr, Ross Noble, Kurt Schoonraad, Nik Rabinowitz, Marc Lottering, Riaad Moosa, and Trevor Noah. This year you can be assured of equally talented appearances in the form of:
- Sifiso Nene the Comedian
- Lindy Johnson
- The Big Boys (Bradley and Ashley Searle)
- Alan Committee
- Carvin H Goldstone
- Emo Adams
The festival is also excited to welcome visiting acts, Matt Tarrant from Australia and Kev Orkian from the UK.
The Baxter Theatre celebrates its 40th anniversary in August this year and has been hosting this event for the last 14 years. The Baxter’s history is not without controversy since the theatre has been a proud bastion of multi-racial productions from the time of its inception. Today, this fearless celebration of the performing arts continues, with a wide range of cutting-edge musical, dance and theatrical acts on the go year-round.
The venue boasts an exceptional bar, called the Long Bar which dominates the ground floor and is open before and after every performance. Take the gap and arrive a little early to get in the right frame of mind for a show that’s packed full of punchlines, puns and tongue-in-cheek fun.
A range of vegetarian eats are also available at the onsite Baxter Restaurant where you can choose from a buffet that’s bulging with biryanis, kormas, paneer tikka masalas and curries as well as vegetable bakes, stir-fries and pasta.
The show is on from 4 or 5 pm daily, which gives you plenty of time to make a night of it and continue the merriment at one of Cape Town’s superb bars or clubs afterward.
