If you’re looking for a crowd-free break from the bustle of the big city, the Elgin Valley is a wonderful place to spend some time.

This little-known gem of the Western Cape is just an hour’s drive from the Mother City and offers a wealth of things to do and see on Cape Town day trips.

These are the best things to get up to on your trip to Elgin.

Take a Cape Canopy Tour

Start your day off with a rush of adrenaline after winding through tranquil landscapes to reach your destination.

The Cape Canopy tour takes place in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve and you’ll drive for about half an hour inside this lovely World Heritage Site before you reach your jumping off point.

Once you get started swooping from platform to platform, you’ll cruise the heights for four hours soaring above lush valleys on a zipline.

Hiking in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve

For a closer look at this lovely environment, you can choose from two trails in the reserve. These are:

  • The 8-hour Boegoekloof Hiking Trail

  • Boland Hiking Trail, offering five different routes

Most visitors opt for the 12km hike from Nuweberg to Landdroskop which usually takes a comfortable five hours.

Mountain Biking in the Elgin Forest

Mountain biking in Cape Town is always spectacular and if you prefer shorter exertions, this is the way to explore the sand and gravel trails of the Elgin Forest. Here, you’ll pedal through gorgeous orchards, forest, and fynbos with a few bridges and rocks thrown in for good measure.

Most of the trails in this area take about an hour and a half to complete.

Wining and Dining

Would you rather indulge in more genteel pursuits? Elgin won’t disappoint.

You can sip on fine brandies at Oude Molen Brandy Distillery, or sample outstanding vintages at one of the local wine farms, like:

  • Paul Wallace Wines

  • Oneiric Wines

  • Almenkerk Wine Estate

For food extravagances, Tarra Madre dishes up traditional Greek fare and some of the best fruit juices around.

The Elgin Railway Market is a must-visit during your day trip, featuring an Art Deco, Steampunk vibe. Here you’ll find a host of food and drink stalls to choose from against a background of live music from local artists.

Elgin Steam Train

If preferred, you can add a unique spin to your Cape Town day trip by hopping onboard the Elgin steam train from Cape Town.

The Puffing Billy departs from the Harbor Bridge Hotel and travels via Sir Lowry’s Pass to the Railway Market, where you’ll spend three hours before steaming back to Cape Town.
