Shopping at some of the Mother City’s many markets is a highlight of any stay in Cape Town self-catering accommodation.

While many of Cape Town’s Christmas markets get off to an early seasonal start during November, it’s not too late to pick up some unique last-minute gifts at these top markets.

Simply South Gift and Craft Fair

The ninth Simply South Gift and Craft Fair is in its ninth year and is still one of the best places to pick up unique goods during your Cape Town stay. This year promises to be bigger than ever before with over 200 stalls selling a wide range of handcrafted gifts and eats.

For extra convenience, you pay for your goods at a central pay point when you leave, so there’s no scrabbling for change at every stall.

Candles, jewellery, mugs, clothes and toys are just some of the unique items up for grabs.

The fair takes place at Westcott Primary School along Boundary Road in Diep River and is on the go until 22 December.

Pinelands Craft and Gift Fair

Hosted at Pinelands High School in Forest Drive, this market has over 160 stalls with a Christmas theme. Pick up some handcrafted cards, Christmas decorations, leatherwork, toys, jewellery, clothing and more.

When you’ve filled your basket, head for the Page Break tearoom for a cuppa and cake or a light meal. The market is in town until 22 December, so it’s the perfect place to pick up those last minute items.

Edgemead Craft and Gift Market

Here, you’ll find 250 of the Western Cape’s most accomplished crafters assembled together under one roof at the Edgemead Community Hall.  The market is on until 22 December and attracts stallholders from as far afield as Riversdale, Vredenburg and Mossel Bay.

This highly anticipated community market is a must shop spot for all your last minute gifts with over 200 vendors exhibiting their Christmas wares so there’s a good variety available.

Decorations, gifts, bath goodies and homemade eats are all up for grabs at this popular market.

The market is open from 10am to 8pm daily and there are card facilities available.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market (OZCF)

If the family and friends you want to gift this year are real foodies, then the OZCF market held every Saturday and Sunday on the Granger Bay site at the V&A Waterfront is your go to spot.

A true farmers market, you will find everything from raw honey and organic cheeses to fresh-from-the-farm veggies, ethically sourced seafood and meat as well. In the small retail section of the market you’ll find locally made clothing, home accessories, delicate craft jewellery and houseplants.

If all the gift shopping makes you hungry and thirsty there are delicious dishes for all palates at the artisanal food stalls which you can enjoy at one of the long communal tables and benches outdoors. Open Saturdays 9am-2pm, Sundays 9am-3pm and Wednesday nights market 4pm-8pm.
