Whether you’re a Cape Town local or looking for a way to fill some spare time during a trip to the Mother City, you’ll find no shortage of green spaces to enjoy free time filled with fresh air.
Here’s where to go when you feel like a time-out in Cape Town:
Zandvlei Recreational Park
It’s rare to come across a natural treasure so close to a city, and Zandvlei delivers with glorious estuary and wetland views near Muizenberg.
There’s plenty of space to braai and picnic, or simply relax amid the tranquillity of this beautiful Cape Town destination.
The Company’s Garden
As one of the oldest and most established spaces in the city, the Company’s Garden offers a wealth of plants and birds to enjoy. Stroll around or settle down with the squirrels for company on a trip to this sunny-sanctuary close to the Iziko South African Museum.
De Waal Park
Just down the road from the Company’s Garden, this Oranjezicht park’s a favourite spot for dog walkers and parents alike. It’s also the venue for free concerts during the summer months.
Towering trees and children’s playgrounds add to the appeal of this pleasant city space.
Another top spot for outdoor entertainment, like Kirstenbosch Gardens, Maynardville Park hosts wonderful open-air theatre performances in the warmer months.
There’s plenty to do here between shows too, with water features, playgrounds, and picnic areas for optimum relaxation during your free time.
Green Point Urban Park
Urban by name, but rural in nature, Green Point Park’s a swathe of greenery extending from the Cape Town stadium toward Sea Point. Here you can walk, cycle, and relax, while your children enjoy the playground.
There’s also a biodiversity nursery onsite if you’d like to start your own natural haven at home.
Close to the Rondebosch Common, this little haven of greenery boasts stunning blooms, huge trees, and vast lawns where you can kick back with a picnic or a good book.
The park also hosts plenty of local markets and is a great place for a soul-cleansing stroll too.
